MotoGP lights up the Gulf

It would be easy to think that the most impressive thing about the first race of the MotoGP in Qatar was the riding - and it was superb. But actually, the most impressive thing was five metres above the track

The race was excellent. Stonor did his stuff, Rossi did his but Stonor came out on top. Migrants from SuperBikes beat MotoGP old hands with Toseland 6th and Dovizisoso 4th. Lorenzo rode a stunning race to come in second and Pedrosa fought all the way through the race to finishe 3rd. Hayden went backwards until people in front of him fell off.

There were arguments about tyres and wear rates may or may not have had something to do with it.

Right. That’s the racing done with.

For even though it was absolutely thrilling stuff, it was not the most interesting thing about the race. For the Qatar GP was the first MotoGP held at night.

That meant heat and humidity are wildly different to during the day - desert nights are chilly even in summer.

But what was truly impressive was the lighting.

Somehow, we had missed the fact that MotoGP would run a night race before Formula One. And for F1 one of our principle concerns was how we would be able to identify the cars - after all, some of them are difficult to tell apart under natural light.

The lighting in Qatar was, simply, wonderful. Long gone, it seems, are the old days of dubiously coloured lighting surrounding a speedway or other quarter mile circuit - which is what Europeans have grown up with. The colours were, simply, outstanding. It was easy to see each bike in perfect clarity, something which is often denied to TV viewes.

In the next couple of weeks, when F1 does its test in Singapore, there will be a lighting check. It will be the first time the teams have seen their livery under the new style lights.

If it comes close to the lighting at Qatar, we’ll all be very happy bunnies.
